When German troops besieged and occupied Antwerp in 1914, a large community of German expats lived and worked here. The numerous German-owned businesses, schools, churches and charities showed how deeply-rooted these German expats were here. And their architectural, cultural and etymological remnants are still present along Antwerp’s streets.
‘German Traces in Antwerp’ explores the German era through stories, buildings, family names and interiors from that time. Our walking route follows the occupations and lives of German traders, artists and architects in Antwerp and reveals the emotional conflict that the war brought to these expats. The siege of Antwerp in 1914 tested their loyalty to the fatherland and turned their daily lives upside down.
