Walk in Hazewinkel and visit to Micro Brewery

May 17, 2014 @ 10:15 am

 Domein Bos Het Broek (www.natuurenbos.be)

P4010219This area is a place where “elves and swamp spirits” feel at home according to the website! It was an area frequently flooded until a dyke was built along the river Ruppel in the 12th century. The area became useful for cutting peat so man-made ponds formed. In the 19th century a pre-historic pile village was discovered (houses had been built on poles). Later the area was used for growing poplar trees which were used in the match-making industry.

Now the original plants and vegetation are being introduced to create the original habitat. Water birds, frogs and dragonflies are plentiful. (Bring your binoculars along.) Mammoth tusks, vertebrae and other fossils have been discovered mainly deposited in the ice age period.

Our organized walk will begin at the Bloso car park Hazewinkle at 10.15am. The walk will be just over 5ks and take approximately 1.5hrs including, if possible, a short visit to a small visitors centre.

At 11.45 am on to the Micro Brewery Den Triest, Triest 24, 1880 Kapelle-op-den-Bos –www.dentriest.be –  for a tour and explanation about the brewery. After which we will have beer tasting and a sandwich lunch.

Those who would prefer not to join the walk can meet us at the brewery at about 12.00.
